About the Blogger

Anya99 has written about Atlanta for local, regional and national publications since sometime in the late 20th century. She started RetroATL.com so she could write more about her favorite things which include wearing vintage dresses and pointy pumps, slowly sipping Polynesian cocktails in the Monster Island Tiki Lounge (aka her “den”), cheering on the Atlanta Rollergirls, watching old movies from cult to classic at the Plaza Theatre, and swinging to rockabilly at the Star Bar.

Why the 99? Would you believe it has something to do with Barbara Feldon on GET SMART? Yeah, that’s right, the original 1960s TV series with Don Adams, not the recent Steve Carel remake. But, of course, you knew that already which is why you’re reading this blog.

However, to keep up with all the amazing local talent and activities here in Atlanta, I could use a few guest bloggers. If you’d like to blog for ATLRetro, email ATLRetro@gmail.com.

I’ve been following your blog for a bit. I love it, but I think it would be great to feature local ATL folks, who live a retro life style or perhaps feature their homes.

Also, Northcrest is Atlanta’s premier mid-century modern ‘hood (despite being OTP). You can find info on the website (http://www.northcrestmodern.com/). And there are a few people who blog about various renovations on their home, for example, Our Modern Mess (http://ourmodernmess.blogspot.com/), and I’m sure they’d love some publicity from your blog.

    Hi May,

You’re welcome and thanks for the compliment on ATLRetro, too. Just checked out your Website and love the reference to you as a new Ella Fitzgerald! If you play Atlanta, please get in touch as I’d love to run an interview with you. I hope to be back in NY soon, too, so I’ll be sure to check and see if you’re playing.

Hey! What a cool site! I am “newly” re-geting involved in the design scene and events
around Atlanta and am hoping to keep up with all your postings by liking your blog on FB.
Does everything your site posts, appear on the FB news feed? Sorry to be a newb. I create
furniture for kooky people like myself and kids, that is based on the notion of sci-fi and music icons of the
50’s 60’s and 70’s, so I am looking to find more events where others with my sensibilities might
be frolicking, drinking perhaps? Socializing for sure. Looking forward to meeting you if these
events are regular and you attend. Cheers!

    Ted

Thanks, Ted! Your compliment on the site means a lot as it is a labor of love to me. Yes, if you like ATLRetro on Facebook or follow us on Twitter, we also do a status update for every new post/article. My only caveat to that is that Facebook no longer distributes Page updates to everyone who likes the page, so I’d advise clicking on ATLRetro.com a few times a week just to doublecheck you haven’t missed anything. That’s also a great way to support the page as it increases our actual hits and helps with search engine optimization! What you do sounds like a swell fit for the site, so feel free to drop me an email to atlretro@gmail.com with more info. We’ll be firing up the shopping section again soon and would love to do an interview with you. Finally, yes, I do attend many of the events covered. I’ll be at the Rock n Roll Monster Bash at the Starlight Drive-In this weekend, so email me if you’re around! Cheers back to you!

    Hey!

Ok, I had to regrettably miss the RnR Monster Bash – what a bunch of !@#$@# because that would have been so cool! (mainly because of getting ready for the Hukilau this past weekend, are you familiar with that bunch? If not you MUST google it; awesome!) But I am now, for this your blog, finally going to cave and join twitter b/c i am not sure i’m getting all the updates and am looking forward to them! Will be in touch…

    Best,

    Ted

    Hi Anya,

I started my blog, Honeysuckle Roads, in September and I noticed that we have a lot of overlapping interests (especially rockabilly music)!

One of my favorite subjects to write about was the Ghost Riders Car Club/Blacktop Rockets performance I saw in November at Avondale Towne Cinema. I am planning to write a post about the Disapyramids at Trader Vics for Mai Tai Thursdays (last Thursday), and am very excited to chronicle “Queen of Rockabilly” Wanda Jackson’s upcoming show at City Winery Atlanta this Friday, the 27th!

Hey monchichi is this site still a going concern? I live in Ft. Myers FL and got Blitzed by Hurricane Igor I mean Ian. Lived in ATL from 1990 to 2000 and come back frequently but finding out what’s happening before I arrive is getting harder and harder. type words of encouragement to me and, if the news is bad, lie to me. Thanks for the love, Nick! Truth is, we’ve gotten way too busy with real life things lately, so apologies that ATLRetro, while still a labor of love, has taken a backseat. It’s no lie, though that I have no plans, however, to take the site down so all archived articles have a permanent home here. And as time permits, Melanie and I will continue to post fresh articles as we can and Anthony Taylor is doing his Apes on Film DVD review column. If anyone wants to take on This Week in ATLRetro, we’d love to bring that back as folks like you have told us they appreciated a central spot to find out what’s happening and to support independent performers and venues. So if you know anyone who’s game to take that on, please send them my way at atlretro@gmail.com!
