Broadway musical ANASTASIA spins a magical tale at the Fabulous Fox Theatre from Tues. Dec. 6 through Sun. Dec. 11, closing out the 2022 line-up of the Regions Bank Broadway in Atlanta season. From the Tony Award-winning creators of the Broadway hit RAGTIME and based on the 1997 movie directed by renowned animators Don Bluth and Gary Goldman, this dazzling production transports audiences from the twilight of the Russian Empire to the euphoria of Paris in the 1920s, as a brave young woman sets out to discover the mystery of her past. Pursued by a ruthless Soviet officer determined to silence her, “Anya” enlists the aid of a dashing conman and a lovable ex-aristocrat. Together, they embark on an epic adventure to help her find home, love, and family.
ATLRetro caught up with Atlanta native Lathan A. Roberts to talk about his role as a dancer in the ensemble, how special it is being on stage in Atlanta after traveling all over for the current tour, his favorite moments in the show, and his love of the amazing costumes. Lathan attended Heritage High School in Conyers and Brenau University in Gainesville, and during the pandemic, he trained with Atlanta Dance Connection for a year.
How special is it to be on stage in your hometown? And this stage, in particular? Brit Turner of the band Blackberry Smoke recently told fans that he was overjoyed to finally reach his goal of selling out the Fox Theatre. It seems the venue holds an important place in the hearts of many Atlantans.
Yes, I was born and raised here in Atlanta, Ga. It means the world for me to be able to return home and perform at the iconic Atlanta Fox Theatre! I’ve seen so many great tours and concerts at the Fox, and it has always been my dream to perform there, and that dream is finally coming true!
You’ve been traveling all over the country for this current tour. What’s it like being back in Atlanta after that experience?
After almost eight months on tour with ANASTASIA, it feels rewarding to be able to return home and perform for my friends and family.
Can you tell us your favorite place (city, venue) where you’ve performed, outside of Atlanta?
Ottawa, Canada, has to be my favorite city and venue so far.
How much longer will you be on the road?
ANASTASIA is currently running through May of 2023.
What are some of your favorite moments in the show?
My favorite moment in the show is the Ballet. I get to live my Principal Dancer dream; also I get to share the stage with my amazing partners Gabriella Burke and Luke Rands.
What can you tell us about the majestic costumes in the show?
The costumes in this show are so stunning. That’s why they were nominated for the Tony Award for the 2017 Best Costume Design in a Musical. When I found out I booked this contract, I was more exited to wear the costumes than anything else.
What are some of your favorite retro things to do in Atlanta? What places would you recommend a visitor to the city not miss?
Growing up, I loved going to the World of Coke and the beautiful Georgia Aquarium. If you’re looking for a nice time outside, I would for sure check out Piedmont Park and the Beltline.
Is there anything else you’d like to share with us about the show, your background or Atlanta/The Fox?
I just hope everyone comes out and supports ANASTASIA at the Fox Theatre! We will be performing Dec. 6 through Dec. 11, with two shows both Saturday and Sunday!
